When the TWOPENNY POST was introduced in 1801, all letters in the London area, whether received or for delivery, or for transfer to or from the General Post, were charged 2d. If the cost was not prepaid, a large handstruck '2' was applied to the front of the letter. This was applied only at one of the two Principal offices of the TWOPENNY POST, where the date stamp was also applied. These handstuck '2' marks were originally about 29mm high, but were later reduced to 22mm. Although basically similar, they varied in design
