Second World War 1940-1946 We have very little information about this item, it was given to me nearly 40 years ago, and does not appear in the Stanley Gibbons Four Kings specialist catalogue. A Google websearch has revealed that it was issued in 1944. No doubt a visitor to the website would be able to share their knowledge with us, and if so, we would be delighted! Olympic Games 1948 - Commemorative Air Letter General issue Air letter with printed stamp area value 6d
I have not been able to identify this specific example, which is NOT airmail, just a Forces Letter, and the information I have found from the British Philatelic Bulletin, relates to an earlier edition with the postage rate of only 1½ stamp attached.
The increasing availability of aircraft in the last few months of the Second World War allowed the authorities to reduce the cost of air letters sent to those ‘on active service’ to 1 ½d, even less than it cost to send a normal letter within the uk. These air letters followed exactly the same format as the 6d civilian issue (see part one of this series, in the September Bulletin) and were folded into four and sealed with two small gummed flaps. They were printed on a buff-coloured paper with the King George vi 1 ½:d stamp. This example has to be later than 1951 as it has the pale colour stamp 2½d stamp attached.
